Hannah's Preliminary Story Boards

Summary:

"Circles" is a high energy, hard-hitting song by Denver trio, Fire in the Asylum. The core message of the song stems from a general frustration with how the government and society operate. Somehow, now matter how hard some of us work to get further in life, we can't escape certain restraints and set backs imposed by forces beyond our control. The music video we produce will highlight the anger and ferocity inherent in this song and will follow a circular narrative to further reinforce the concept of "Circles."

Description:

One of the main priorities that Fire expressed to us was that they wanted was a balance between performance shots and story shots. We plan to film the band both performing in a venue setting as well as outdoors, where the narrative will take place. The three members of the band will be chased throughout the video by large bullies, all while just trying to get back to a place of childlike simplicity. The venue shots will be filmed at Benders Tavern and Old Curtis St. Bar. We plan to travel to a controlled environment as possible for the outdoors shots, hopefully open dirt roads or fields in eastern colorado.

We will use circular and rotating camera movements around the band to enhance the feeling of going in circles. This will be most important in the first few seconds of the song where Josh sings "Sometimes I feel like I'm going in circles!!!!" The camera will be circling around him during this time and in the end of the video as well. The piece will have a very dark and abstract aesthetic to ensure that this video stands out from their previous videos online and gets lots of attention for the band.

Lyrics like "its daylight I'm never getting back times up and the suns up, and I am going down..." will be illustrated by the lead singer, Josh, being attacked by the bullies, being pulled down, ruffed up, and visibly wounded. All three members will be chased throughout the video, trying to get to where they want to be, but ultimately end up where they began in the first place.

Style Guide -- Look and Feel for "CIRCLES"

The look and feel of the video will involve a subdued and grungy color palate. The consensus with the band is that they want an edgy video that looks visually eye catching and different. They want it to stand out from the rest of their material online.

Several different camera methods will be used to achieve an unusual look, including lens vexing, circular camera work, and color correction.
